Hello, and welcome to the Space by Stansons podcast! Today, I’m thrilled to be chatting with a key influence in workplace design, the creative director of CAST Interiors. She has an amazing career journey, and I’m excited to learn more about her story. So, welcome!

You’re very welcome. So, how did your career take off?

I started in architecture, something I was passionate about since childhood. I studied in Ireland, graduating during a recession with few job opportunities. Fortunately, I landed unpaid internships in Dublin, working on master planning and niche interior projects. I realized my love for interiors and sought more experience, leading me to an internship in London. There, I enjoyed designing reception spaces and lobby postboxes, which fueled my interest in furniture and lighting.

To understand the building process better, I joined a big contractor in London, focusing on interior fit-outs. This experience taught me about buildability and the evolving industry, where contractors are involved earlier in projects. I worked closely with design studios to turn visions into reality, which was invaluable.

Is that what you call technical design?

Not exactly. It’s more about development and coordination, addressing on-site discoveries and ensuring everything fits together smoothly.

Many think architects and designers are the same. How do you explain the difference?

It’s like comparing a brain surgeon to a dentist. Architecture focuses on structures and regulations, while interior design centers on how spaces feel and function. Despite this, the skills are transferable. My architectural background helps me understand scale and dimensions, which is crucial in interior design.

What skills from architecture do you use in your interior-focused work?

Understanding scale and dimensions is key. I can quickly spot inaccuracies in drawings, ensuring spaces feel natural and intuitive. It’s personal—each designer has a unique style influenced by their background, which helps us assign the right projects to the right people.

As creative director, does this help in project assignments?

Absolutely. Matching the right people with the right projects is vital. We have team members who excel in specific areas and have strong client relationships. It’s all about inspiring them and leveraging their strengths.

CAST Interiors is female-led. Are you one of the founders?

Yes, along with Zoey and our colleagues. We’re proud to be majority female-owned, with 36% female representation in an industry averaging 14%. Our diverse team brings creativity and different perspectives, enhancing our work.

What inspired you to set up CAST?

We wanted to do things differently and not be bound by traditional company constraints. We saw opportunities to innovate in sustainability and social value without needing approvals from a board. Starting small allowed us to take bold steps, test ideas, and make meaningful changes, especially in environmental sustainability.
