In conversation with – Angelia Liard
It was a pleasure to chat with Angelia Liard from Area.
A Creative Director at area, she has over 25 years of experience in workplace consultancy and design across the UK, Europe, and the US. She has worked on extensive projects with leading brands such as JP Morgan, BP, and the Royal Bank of Scotland. Angela’s transition from Sheppard Robson to area marked a shift from traditional consultancy to a more fast-paced, collaborative approach. She emphasizes the importance of understanding each client’s unique needs and reasons for seeking workspace solutions, especially in light of changing perceptions post-COVID. Angela believes that the office serves as a hub for collaboration and coming together, facilitating efficient problem-solving and idea generation. She stresses the role of both physical collaboration and technology in supporting modern work practices, highlighting the office as a destination for business activities and networking.
What is the office for?
It’s for coming together and collaborating. It’s so much easier, and so much quicker, and more efficient if you can all come together in the room at the same time.
A perfect example was during COVID we had come into the office, smaller teams, 2 meters apart, we had a really quick clients requests and really quick turnaround and we had everyone in the room we needed who where able to throw it all out on the able and come up with a solution really quickly where it would have taken hours or days if you were needing to dial people in.
Is there a perfect location for an office?
A perfect place is something that is easily commutable, you’ve got stuff around you, you can easily access, that’s not necessarily work related. Of course access to outdoor space, green space, like a roof terrace.

If you’re keen to get people back into the office you need to look at what you need to provide. in the office space that’s either different to what they have at home, or is a real pull back to the office.
