The Benefits of Biophilic Design: A Conversation with Planteria’s Katie
I recently had the pleasure of speaking with Katie, a workplace design expert from Planteria, about the power of biophilic design. Biophilic design refers to incorporating natural elements into built environments, with the goal of enhancing people’s health, well-being, and productivity.
In our conversation, Katie outlined the scientific research showing how exposure to living things like plants has measurable positive impacts – lowering stress, improving mood, increasing productivity, and more. She sees her role as an educator, helping partners and clients appreciate and integrate planting into their spaces.
Katie explained the difference between general biophilic design principles and her specialty in advising on plants. As an accredited biophilic design practitioner, she has a holistic view, while providing specific expertise on choosing, placing, and caring for plants in workplaces.
We discussed interesting examples of how to engage clients by telling the story behind plant choices and themes. Katie also shared insights into optimal locations for planting, integrating sustainability goals, and deciding when artificial plants might make more sense.
It was fascinating to learn from Katie’s deep knowledge of using plants to create healthy, engaging work environments that support employees. I’m grateful for her time and expertise exploring this important facet of workplace wellness and performance.
Katie’s thoughtful perspectives on biophilic design are truly worth a listen for any organization looking to enhance their spaces.
