Vision and shade for a stylish modern office

The London offices of international publishing house Macmillan occupy a modern building in a central location close to the fashionable creative hub north of Kings Cross. Dramatic full height windows offer views across rooftops and the historic canal area, but also create challenging solar glare. Different elevations of the building required different shading solutions, but with some areas open plan, consistent appearance was essential.

Prestige and function

Macmillan Publishers is a global trade book publishing company with prominent imprints around the world. The company’s London offices offer a contemporary environment, combining meeting rooms and open plan areas with smaller, more private spaces. London-based international construction services company ISG was contracted to provide fit-out, and specified a bright but softening touch to the environment to compliment the Scandinavian furniture and modern décor.

Because of the height of the building, and the variety of windows including floor to ceiling types, the specification required varying performance to control varying light levels on different elevations. At the same time a consistent appearance, both internally and externally was required.

The Stansons solution

The Stansons solution was to provide roller blinds featuring Armour metal backed fabrics that would diffuse the light, creating a soft but bright ambiance. The textile specified is woven in a wide range of openness's, meaning the solar gain on each elevation could be controlled, with specific fabric selected for each window dependant on predicted light levels.

Working directly with ISG Plc the solution was planned and installation was completed in two separate phases to fit in with other works. All blinds were installed on a back bar fixing profile to guarantee secure installation and lengthen the blinds’ working life.

A stylish and productive environment

The careful selection of fabric openness for individual windows has enabled a comfortable and consistent working environment to be created. Glare is controlled throughout the office even on the brightest days, while staff still have easy manual control of blinds, allowing them to make full use of views.

From the outside, the metal back provides external colour consistency supporting corporate prestige, while allowing fabric styles and colour variation if required internally.
