Aylward Academy

Creating a comfortable learning environment

Aylward Academy is a mixed secondary and sixth form school in Edmonton, in the London Borough of Enfield. As part of a major development which included a substantial new block, the academy required intelligent window solutions from Stansons which would create a comfortable and inviting learning environment. This would involve a number of technical challenges, including roof lights and striking architectural feature windows six metres high.

Elegance and function in a demanding environment

The London Academies Education Trust (LAET) selected Carillion as the main contractor for the new Aylward Academy, which included the refurbishment of a range of existing school buildings on the site, and a major new extension. This new block would include roof windows and a striking architectural feature of a double height classroom area with windows six metres in height.

The demanding educational environment would require durability, while the need to present attractive and calm places for learning demanded consistent appearance as well as easy operation.

The Stansons solution

The Stansons team devised a combination of Armour motorised and chain operated roller blinds, colour matched to the Academy's specification using the Armour range of intelligent textiles.

The six metre drop roller blinds were supplied using a woven mesh fabric, allowing solar gain to be controlled across elevations and creating a bright environment, preventing glare without restricting the view from the inside outwards.

The remaining windows were fitted with chain operated Armour roller blinds in a light grey PVC lined fabric, matching the colour scheme of the Academy. All blinds were installed on a back bar fixing profile to guarantee a secure installation.

“Stansons were able to offer ideal solutions for our elevations, using a range of intelligent fabrics to suit the function of the room”

Simple control

Due to the height of some of the windows manual operation was not feasible across all elevations. A motorised solution was specified and installed with smart touch screen controls enabling independent rise and lower across elevations. In addition, the estate management team were given an independent master handset providing full remote control.

The ease of control, together with the attractive appearance and superior performance of the blinds is a major contribution to the quality of the teaching environment at the Academy.
